JOB SUMMARY
Assist the nursing staff by performing assigned duties to help patients meet the activities of daily living, collect specimens, vital signs, and other related data and assists in communication of patient/family needs to the nurse or other team members.
Performs patient care activities/treatments for which basic competency has been documented under the supervision of an RN.
The activities include skills verified by faculty of the nursing program and documented on the school’s skills checklist.
In addition, the individual must demonstrate competency in the skill performance as determined by T.

Samson Community Hospital and documented on the nursing intern competency checklist.
Demonstrates competency in dealing with patient specific to the work area.
Performs other related duties.
Requirements: JOB REQUIREMENTS Minimum Education Active enrollment at a board-approved pre-licensure program of nursing with completion of their Junior Year.
Required Skills Successful completion of skills checklist at school of nursing, orientation to the job level, and on-the-job training as necessary.
Minimum Work Experience None Work Requirements: 10 week paid externship where extern will be expected to work full time hours alongside a designated RN.
Must commit in advance to all 10 weeks.
Less than 24 hours/week is considered PRN and follow PRN Guidelines.
Staff is encouraged to work 12 hour shifts if possible.
Turn in days available to appropriate scheduling staff by the deadline for request.
All requests for work hours will be considered, based on need, but may not be granted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS This role is designed to provide practical experience in a supervised work situation for senior level nursing students.
This employment opportunity in intended to enhance the experiential preparation of pre-licensure nursing students while assuring the safe and effective care of patients as allowed by Kentucky Board of Nursing 201KAR 20:400.
Essential duties of this position will comply with applicable statutes, regulations, and responsibilities related to delegation of tasks to unlicensed persons.
The Nurse Extern may provide nursing assistance under the continuous, direct, onsite supervision of a designated registered nurse.
Provides personal patient care according to organizational standards and policies Provides nutritional support as indicated by patient condition Obtains and documents accurately weights, I&O, and vital signs as indicated by unit needs Assists the RN in gathering initial vital signs, weight, and orients patients to hospital environment for initial assessment and history Reports abnormal findings to RN Assists to identify physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs of the patient Performs patient care activities, treatments, and procedures delegated/supervise by RN staff for which individual has demonstrated competency Collaborates with other team members to maintain a high quality of care Proactively identifies and resolves issues within the unit; refers to Nurse Manager as indicated Maintains a safe, neat work environment in patient care area Completes any other assigned duties as necessary to meet the needs of the department and patients Adheres to T.
